Many years ago a group of friends thought that the best place to gaze at the full moon was on Ko Phangan Island. So they organised a small party along the crescent-shaped white sandy beach of Haad Rin, gathered a few friends around a fire, played guitar and danced until sunrise. Legend has it that these friends would sit playing cards and music waiting for the next full moon, inviting passersby to join them for the next party.
Today this party has transformed into a huge event, attracting tourists from all over the world to one of the biggest beach parties under the night sky. Party goers dance, drink, and if they are brave enough, jump over a rope of flaming fire.
"The next big full moon frenzy is on the 10th December and is expected to draw between 10 000 to 30 000 tourists from around the globe. Monthly full moon parties do take place during the year, but nothing as big as the one that takes place on Haad Rin beach," explains Thamanoon Kuprasert, general manager of Central, Eastern and Southern Africa for Thai Airways International (THAI).
Entertainment includes 12 major sound systems stretched across the beach with talented Thai and international DJ's engaging the surging crowds. There is no room for disappointment, as there is something for everyone, whether you enjoy trance, techno, drum, bass, commercial dance, pop or reggae.
To really get you in the mood of the party, let a young Thai lady paint different patterns and images on your arms and face with UV colours. The lasers add an electric atmosphere to the party, along with the flair of jugglers and fire-eaters who invite those who are daring to jump over a rope of fire.
For the non-adrenalin junkie, there is a fireworks display on the warm waters of the peninsula to enjoy. All this excitement tends to build up an appetite, so tourists can visit traders on the beach to buy food and drinks. All drinks are served in different sized jugs with multiple straws so they can be shared with friends. "But, make sure you look after your drinks throughout the night and don't let anyone slip anything into them," explains Kuprasert.
The beach is equipped with tables and chairs for you and your friends to eat pizza, hot dogs or Prego rolls. If this doesn't sustain your hunger, then you are free to order more from the restaurants and bars along the Had Rin Nok beach.
"Tourists have the option of renting bungalows right on the beach in the middle of the party. If you prefer to get some sleep and have a relaxing holiday, then there are plenty of hotels in Ko Phangen who will accommodate you," concludes Kuprasert.
Best of all, THAI is introducing their Fly&Smile promotion until the 31st of March 2012, allowing you to see Bangkok, Phuket and Chiang Mai all at once. For more information please visit www.thaiair.co.za or phone (011) 268 2580.
